UK Factory Output Declines Less than Estimated
Manufacturing production in the United Kingdom declined 1.2% yoy in October 2019, lower than a 1.8% drop in September and market forecasts of a 1.4% fall. On a monthly basis, factory output edged up 0.2%, rebounding from a 0.4% fall in September and beating expectations of a flat reading. The largest upward contribution came from pharmaceutical products (2.1%, following two consecutive periods of significant monthly weakness). Other positive contributions came from food, beverages and tobacco (0.6%), led by the impact of large businesses within other food products and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers industry (0.9%), which was impacted by the production of new models. In contrast, production fell for basic metals and metal products (-1.6%), driven by weakness within fabricated metal products and basic iron and steel; and electrical equipment, which fell by 4.3% because of cumulative weakness from large businesses.

UK Factory Activity Falls for 6th Month
Manufacturing production in the United Kingdom declined 1.8% yoy in September of 2019, following 1.6% decrease in the prior month and compared with market forecasts of a 1.6% fall. It is the sixth straight month of annual declines in manufacturing. On a month-over-month basis, industrial output dropped 0.4% after a 0.7% drop in August, amid widespread weakness, with 8 of the 13 subsectors falling. The largest downward contribution came from the pharmaceutical products subsector, which fell by 5.1%. Elsewhere, smaller negative contributions from rubber and plastics products (-1%); wood, paper and paper products (-0.8%); chemicals and chemical products (-0.7%) and other manufacturing and repair (-0.5%) were partially offset by upward contributions from computer, electronic and optical products, and basic metals and metal products, which rose by 1.3% and 0.4% respectively. Considering Q3, factory output dropped 1.4% yoy and stalled compared with the previous three months.

UK Manufacturing Output Falls for 5th Month
Manufacturing production in the United Kingdom declined 1.7 percent from a year earlier in August 2019, following an upwardly revised 0.9 percent decrease in the prior month and compared with market forecasts of a 0.7 percent fall. It was the fifth consecutive monthly decline in manufacturing activity, as output dropped further for coke & refined petroleum products (-15.9 percent vs 5.8 percent in July); basic metals & metal products (-2.8 percent vs -1.2 percent); machinery & equipment (-6.8 percent vs -5 percent); food, beverages & tobacco (-1.5 percent vs -1.1 percent); and transport equipment (-4.3 percent vs -3.5 percent). Additionally, production of computer, electronic & optical products fell (-0.3 percent vs 1.3 percent) and output growth slowed for electrical equipment (1 percent vs 5.2 percent); and basic pharmaceutical products & preparations (8.9 percent vs 17.5 percent).

Manufacturing production in the United Kingdom dropped 0.6 percent from a year earlier in July of 2019, following a 1.4 percent fall in the previous month and compared with market expectations of a 1.1 percent decline. It is the fourth straight monthly decline in manufacturing activity, as production continued to fall for basic metals & metal products (-1.2 percent vs -1.8 percent); machinery & equipment (-4.3 percent vs -4.6 percent); other manufacturing & repair (-3.2 percent vs -4.1 percent); wood & paper products (-5 percent vs -2.8 percent); chemicals & chemical products (-5.7 percent vs -1.3 percent); transport equipment (-3.8 percent vs -2.8 percent); food, beverages & tobacco (-0.2 percent, the same as in June) and rubber & plastic products (-0.6 percent, the same as in June). On the other hand, output rebounded for coke & refined petroleum products (1 percent vs -3.3 percent) and basic pharmaceutical products (12 percent vs -3.8 percent).

UK Manufacturing Output Falls for 3rd Month
Manufacturing production in the United Kingdom declined 1.4% from a year earlier in June of 2019, after a revised 0.2% decrease in the previous month and compared with market expectations of a 1.1% fall. It is the third straight monthly decline in manufacturing activity. Production continued to fall for wood & paper products (-2.8% vs -3.1% in May); chemicals & chemical products (-1.3% vs -0.3%); basic pharmaceutical products (-3.8% vs -1.2%); machinery & equipment nes (-4.6% vs -5.1%); transport equipment (-2.8% vs -5.4%) and other (-4.1% vs -1.5%). In addition, output declined for coke & refined petroleum products (-3.3% vs 4.1%); food, beverages & tobacco (-0.2% vs 1%); rubber & plastic products (-0.6% vs 2.2%) and basic metals & metal products (-1.8% vs 3.3%). On a monthly basis, manufacturing production edged down 0.2%, after a 1.4% rise in May.

UK Manufacturing Sector Stalls in May
Manufacturing production in the United Kingdom showed no growth from a year earlier in May of 2019, after an upwardly revised 1 percent fall in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 1 percent rise. Output rebounded for coke & refined petroleum products (4.2 percent from -0.2 percent in April) and basic metals & metal products (2.9 percent from -2.2 percent). On the other hand, production fell for wood & paper products and printing (-1.9 percent from 1.9 percent) and basic pharmaceutical products (-2.8 percent from 0.8 percent). At the same time, output went up softer for food, beverages & tobacco (1.3 percent from 3.7 percent); textiles, wearing apparel & leather (3.1 percent from 8 percent); rubber & plastic (2.2 percent from 4.3 percent) and electrical equipment (9.4 percent from 10.8 percent) while output of computer, electronic & optical products rose faster (6.9 percent from 6.3 percent).
